WHY SIKH CELEBRATE DIWALI ....dhan dhan saheb sri Guru Hargobind ji bandi chhod duniya de
,,,,
The Mugal Emperor Jahangir put Guru Hargobind in Gwalior fort
prison, because Guru Hargobind would not do as the Mugal
Emperor ordered him to do. At Gwalior fort prison there were
52 Hindu Kings . They were put into prison because they did not
agree with the Emperor Jahangir
Meanwhile the Mugal Emperor Jahangir became very ill. He was seen by one doctor after
another but nobody could tell what was wrong with him.
Then one day one of the Emperor's astrologists told the Emperor that the
reason he was ill was because he was holding a holyman in his Gwalior fort
prison and if he wanted to get better he would have to let Guru Hargobind
go free. Eventually the Mugal Emperor let Guru Hargobind go.
However Guru Hargobind refused to come out of Gwalior frot prison, instead he demanded the release of all the 52
Hindu Kings held with him. The Emperor agreed on one condition.
Who ever could hold Guru Hargobind'scloak would also go free.
Guru Hargobind had a plan. He had a special robe (Kalian wala
Kurta) sewn for this occasion. It had 52 tassels on it.
The Emperor thought that he was cunning and he ordered
the soldiers to release Guru Hargobind through the narrowest door of all.
To the amazement of everyone Guru Hargobind managed to bring out all 52 Kings to their
freedom. Of course they all held on to a tassel.
When the whole procession reached Amritsar Baba Budha ji had asked
everyone to light clay divas (an earthenware vessel with oil and a small wick) to mark the occasion
in honour of Guru Hargobind. Guru Hargobind ji became known as Bandi Chhorh
Diswas ,,
Since then Sikhs everywhere celebrate Diwali (Festival of Lights).
The Sikhs visit Gurdwaras everywhere and join in with prayers, light candles/divas, offer sweets
